FAQ

When will the Museum be built?

The NMoH will undergo a 3-phase construction schedule. Phase 1 entails the development of the Atrium and the MC & DJ departments. Phase 1 is scheduled for completion within one year of the start of construction. Scheduled for completion within the 2nd year of construction, Phase 2 entails constructing the concert hall and the breakdance & graffiti departments. Phase 3, scheduled for completion within four years after the beginning of construction, will complete the entire project, including the development of surrounding and roof green parks as well as parking and restaurant facilities.

Where will the Museum be located?

The current plans for NMoH calls for development within New York City.

Are there any Hip-Hop celebrities backing this?

There are many celebrities within the Hip-Hop community and beyond that would love to see this project happen. As an official educational institution, the Board at NMoH has decided to limit the level of celebrity participation during the early stages of development. Any celebrity alignments could easily be misconstrued by the public and because of the Hall of Fame, could also pose some conflicts of interest. There are some key celebrities who have lent verbal support and endorsements; but we have decided to keep their identities confidential; as per current NMoH policy.

Are there any political figures on-board with this project?

There are numerous political figures that have expressed a desire to see this project happen. Due to agreements of confidentiality, they will remain nameless right now.

There have been many attempts at making this project happen in the past, what makes this one different?

We appreciate and applaud the efforts of the few attempts to develop a hip-hop museum in the past. We believe that there are a few key factors that directly attributed to the failure of those past efforts: 1) None of the past efforts included the acquisition of proper documentation. The founding team at NMoH spent over 18 months pursuing proper documentation such as non-profit and 501 (c)(3) status as well as an institutional Charter from the NY Board of Regents. 2) Past attempts have been in areas other than the South Bronx. Anyone who understands the true history of hip-hop realizes that a hip-hop museum belongs in the city of its birth; the South Bronx. NMoH is the first and only to propose NYC as the ONLY possible location–declining numerous offers from officials in  other states. 3) Too often within these past attempts, has the development of this project been about either political gain, heightened publicity for personal gain, and/or personal financial gain. The development of this project is both arduous and extremely time-consuming. Once the groups from the past realized how difficult this process was, and that there would be no physical rewards for a long time to come, they all abandoned the project. As previously mentioned, it took the founders of NMoH almost 3 years to acquire the necessary certifications to even begin thinking about fundraising, which means that the 3 years prior to that point, had to entail a tremendous level of volunteer work. Only one group has managed to acquire all the necessary documentation to make this project an official reality; only one group has volunteered 3 years of constant labor to make this happen; only one group has not tried to latch onto celebrities, flood the media with this news prematurely, or has not only not received ANY money for their efforts-but have outlaid thousands of their own dollars, and it is clearly that group that does not do this for money, power or notoriety. They do it because they know the hip-hop community needs it; they do it because they truly love hip-hop. That group is NMoH.

Which aspects of hip-hop are going to be featured within this museum?

NMoH is dedicated to celebrating the history, present and future of every element of hip-hop. Within the Museum, there will exist 4 full departments: MC Department, DJ Department, Breakdance Department and Graffiti Department. Each elemental department will concentrate on the history and specific characteristics of its respective art form.

Will there be any programs and/or exhibitions despite the fact that there is no facility as of yet?

The National Museum of Hip-Hop Foundation will hold numerous teacher, student, public and community programs. NMoH Foundation will develop elemental exhibitions that will be showcased via its institutional partners around the U.S.A.

How will the Hall of Fame work?

We have not yet completed the entire process for the Hall of Fame. We are working diligently with our affiliates at the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame to finalize the details. Check back often for updates on the progress of the Hall of Fame.

How is this project being funded?

The  founders have provided initial funding. Currently, as documentation has permitted, NMoH Foundation is planning a series of fund raising efforts which will include events, programs and exhibitions.

How can I be a part of this project?

NMoH executives have recently authorized the use of community volunteers to help with numerous planned projects for this year. NMoH welcomes and encourages hip-hop fans worldwide to submit their credentials and desired capacity of participation.
